Thus far, the modern architecture project is still in its early stages. We have settled on using a WordPress site to be a sort of digital architectural guide that will host student presentations from previous editions of Professor Rivera’s class. Currently I’m working on sorting through the presentations and checking for citations. I am working with the archivist at Drake Community Library to find sources for the images used in the presentations so we can have properly cited sources on the future website.
I am also working on incorporating a map component into the site. We haven’t decided yet what exactly this map will do, but some possible directions are to make it locate our sites on to a current map of Grinnell, or have the option for users to switch the layers up, so that they can compare current sites to what historically stood there before.
Going forward, we will be meeting with representatives of the Grinnell Chamber of Commerce and (possibly) Drake Library to suggest having this project incorporated into some of their informational offerings on local history and architecture. Once we can understand who exactly our audience will be, it will be easier to figure out some more details with regards to the site layout, how we want the presentations displayed on the site, and other aesthetic choices.
I think the main hurdle so far has just been visualizing what this project could look like. While I do have experience working on a completely new project from scratch, some aspects of this one just leave way more room open for what could be done. I feel like we’ve spent a lot of time talking about the possibilities for the project, so for the next half of the semester I want to focus on having some actual features of the site available to see and test out.
